In our 35 years of owning and running Island Lake we never thought we would have to send this letter. Due to restrictions placed on our operations, Island Lake will be unable to open this summer. We are heartbroken by this.
The guidelines that have come out from the American Camp Association and their consultants say that social distancing is a recommended guideline for 2020. Island Lake cannot be Island Lake with these restrictions so we have made this difficult decision.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is in a phased reopening; Red, Yellow, & Green. Wayne County is currently in red which means stay at home. When it goes to yellow there are restrictions in place that will not allow us to open. The Green Phase has yet to be defined; the rules currently say follow current CDC guidelines. We are sure those will include distancing and mask requirements through the end of the summer. In fact, the criteria that will be used to move a region from the Yellow Phase to the Green Phase are still not determined. A region could be moved back to yellow or red if there is a resurgence of the virus meaning that even if we don’t have an outbreak at camp the Commonwealth could shut us down.
To give you an idea of how important camp is to us, for Matt this will be his first summer not at camp since 1985 and second since 1972. Wendy has also only missed one summer since 1972 and she was very young at the time. The worst decision that we could make would be to open and then have to close because of an outbreak at our facility or in our region.
COVID-19 has changed all of our lives in some way. As adults, we have all had different emotions and difficulties dealing with this pandemic. It is impossible for us to understand the emotions our children are going through as a result of this decision. We were so hopeful to be able to have our campers come to camp and erase some of their fears, anxieties and day to day worries with good old fashioned fun. We are heartbroken that summer will not be a reprieve for them, and for you.
As stated in an earlier email, all registrations for 2020 will be honored for 2021. Campers who would have been entering their last year as campers will still be allowed to be together, as campers, for 2021. If anyone would like to be a CIT, they may choose that option. Please hold off on letting us know your decision until we ask for it. We are still absorbing this in our minds.
It seems surreal to be writing this to you and I’m sure it seems the same to be receiving it. I press the send button with great sadness. We wish you and your families health and happiness in the coming months. And of course, ILCUTHERE 2021!
Wendy, Ricki and Matt, Bev
P.S. Please watch the video below with your campers. It is with heavy hearts that we put this together, along with making the decision, to not open Island Lake this summer. We wish you all good health and happiness this summer.
If your children are coming to camp via the airport, this is important. We must coordinate all of our campers’ flights to ensure an easy travel day for everyone. All South Florida campers should travel together on the same JetBlue flights to and from Fort Lauderdale & Newark. South Florida Jet Blue flights are as follows:
TO CAMP: Fort Lauderdale to Newark: Jet Blue Flight #306: Departs at 9:40am & arrives at 12:35pm
FROM CAMP: Newark to Fort Lauderdale: Jet Blue Flight #505: Departs at 1:30pm & arrives at 4:28pm
All campers traveling from Paris to Newark should fly strictly on United Airlines UA56/UA905 to camp and UA904 from camp.
Campers traveling from St. Louis will fly on United Airlines #4099 to camp and #4628 from camp.
For all other flying campers, please contact Wendy prior to booking flights in order to confirm arrival and departure times. She can be reached at 954-688-9527 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Please don’t wait much longer to book your children’s flight. Prices escalate as the travel dates approach.
Once you’ve confirmed flights with Wendy and you book them, please email her a copy of your children’s flight information. If your children are flying to/from Ft. Lauderdale, please forward her a copy of those tickets, as well.
When booking your flights, please make any necessary “unaccompanied minor” arrangements for both inbound and outbound flights. If your child will be taking the group flight from Ft. Lauderdale on opening day (June 28th), then there is no need to arrange for an unaccompanied minor for that trip. We will have a staff member meet you at the airport in Ft. Lauderdale and fly to Newark with the kids. Please make sure that you do make unaccompanied minor arrangements for the return trip back to Florida.
For all other flights, please make any necessary unaccompanied minor arrangements to/from Newark.
If you have any additional travel questions, feel free to contact Wendy at 954-688-9527 or email@example.com.

All Summer 2014 Island Lake families should have received their annual camp folder by now. There is a great deal of information in this folder to help prepare your child for a successful camp experience. Please take some time to read through everything thoroughly and fill out and return the required forms. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of filling out the forms in a detailed, timely manner. These forms provide us with extensive feedback regarding your child so that our staff can have thorough, accurate knowledge about each camper in order to provide him or her with a safe and successful summer. Profile, Medical, and Transportation Forms must be submitted by May 1st. These forms are necessary for us to finalize plans for the summer. The Profile Form helps us guide your children when they choose their activities and put together their schedules. The Medical Form must be completed by both a parent and a physician, as required by Pennsylvania law. Please note that incomplete Medical Forms will be returned to you. The form must have your complete insurance information and a credit card number for any out of camp medical expenses. Every Medical Form needs to be signed by both a parent and a doctor. The Transportation Form lets us know which bus your children will be taking to camp. If we do not receive the Transportation Form in our office by May 1st, we will have to assign a bus to your children. In June, we will send you detailed information on the bus locations, along with luggage tags that you will use to mark your children’s bags. If you have any questions or need any help filling out your forms, you can always give us a call in the winter office at 914-769-6060 and we’d be happy to help you! We encourage you to use our online system instead of paper forms. If you have not already done so, go to islandlake.com and click on “CampMinder Login”. You will be prompted to enter your email address and password. If this is your first time using the CampMinder system, just click on “First Time Users – Create Account.”
Happy March! As we sit here in our winter office with tons of snow outside our windows, it feels as though summer 2013 is a distant, yet fond, memory. However, our summer 2014 countdown has kicked into gear and lucky for us, summer, and for that matter camp, will approach before we know it.
All summer 2014 families will receive your annual Island Lake folder any day now. This folder contains TONS of information to prepare you and your children for this summer. There are forms inclosed that we request you return to us promptly. The Profile Form helps us guide your children when they choose their activities and put together their schedules. The Medical Form must be completed by both a parent and a physician, as required by Pennsylvania law. The Transportation Form lets us know which bus your children will be taking to camp. If we do not receive the Transportation Form in our office by May 1st, we will have to assign a bus to your children. In June, we will send you detailed information on the bus locations, along with luggage tags that you will use to mark your children’s bags. If you misplace any of your forms, they will be available for download here on our website. You can access them by clicking on ‘Forms & Mailings’ to you left-hand side of this page. There will also be information in the folder instructing you how to fill out the transportation and profile forms on-line.
A reminder to our summer ‘13 and ’14 families, don’t forget to read our monthly newsletters. You can access them here on our website or at the start of every month in your mailbox in hard copy form. The newsletters provide important information for parents as well as campers, including enrollment and availability updates.
Speaking of enrollment, if you haven’t yet registered your child for summer 2014 but plan to do so, please, please, please do not put it off any longer. We truly do not want to turn away any of our devoted campers and it’s very difficult for us when forced to do so every year. Please don’t let that happen to your child. Some bunks are already full! It only takes a few minutes to fill out the registration form, we promise! If you don’t have one handy, click “ILC Families”, “Forms & Mailings” and then print the “2014 Enrollment Form”.
To all current Island Lake families, we look forward to an amazing summer 2014 with your children. To all prospective families, feel free to contact us if you have any questions after browsing our website: 800-869-6083 or 914-769-6060. And last but not least, to one and all…. ILC U THERE!
